Reigning champions Orissa lost their last five wickets for 20 runs to suffer a heat-breaking one run defeat against formidable Bengal in their opening match of the East Zone Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day league match at Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium, Agartala today.
Electing to bat, Bengal rode on skipper Manoj Tiwary`s fine knock of 88 to compile a competitive total of 217 for nine in the stipulated 50 overs. Medium pacer Bibhudutta Panda was the most successful Orissa bowler, bagging four wickets for 57 runs.
Chasing the target, Orissa were well-placed at 195 for five, thanks to opener Natraj Behera`s fluent knock of 81. But two runs outs and a lower-order batting failure cost Orissa the match. Debutant Shami Ahmed and experienced Laxmi Ratan Shukla bowled well for Bengal, scalping three wickets apiece.
